Making Tax Digital 2026: Your Complete Guide to MTD ITSA Compliance in the UK

MTD ITSA: The April 2026 Deadline Is Here

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA) becomes mandatory on April 6, 2026 for self-employed individuals and landlords with income over GBP 50,000. This threshold drops to GBP 30,000 from April 6, 2027, and may extend to income over GBP 20,000 and certain partnerships from April 2028 onwards.

Under MTD ITSA, affected taxpayers must keep digital records using MTD-compatible software and submit quarterly updates to HMRC. The first quarterly update deadline for the 2026-27 tax year is August 7, 2026.

The UK E-Invoicing Mandate: April 2029

Looking further ahead, the UK government announced in Budget 2025 that mandatory structured e-invoicing will apply to all VAT invoices -- both B2B and B2G -- from April 2029. PDFs, Word files, HTML invoices, and OCR-based images will not qualify as compliant e-invoices. A detailed stakeholder collaboration period began in January 2026, with an implementation roadmap expected in Budget 2026.

Businesses that invest in digital document management now will be well-positioned for both MTD compliance and the 2029 e-invoicing mandate.

Digital Recordkeeping Challenges for UK Businesses

A staggering 65% of UK employees experience productivity setbacks due to disorganized digital systems. Many SMEs still rely on paper-based or mixed systems, creating version confusion and compliance risk. With over GBP 3.8 billion in digital transformation funding available across the UK in 2025, including the Digital Transformation Flexible Fund in Northern Ireland offering GBP 5,000 to GBP 20,000 grants, there has never been a better time to modernize.
